Ill-fated rocker Jim Morrison peers down from a concert poster replica. A life-sized Spiderman figure wearing reindeer antlers stands on a table, draped with tinsel and Christmas tree lights. Bacon-flavored candy canes sit under a massive shelf filled with soda of every flavor imaginable.
This is a Rocket Fizz Soda Pop & Candy Shops store. Two friends started the franchise several years ago in California and the shops have made their way to Oregon. When I recently stopped by the Rocket Fizz shop in Beaverton's Progress Ridge TownSquare, store manager Austin Shumway was stringing lights in the windows.
The holiday shopping rush started the weekend before Thanksgiving, he said. The store, perfect for stocking-stuffer shopping, boasts more than 500 different types of soda and 4,000 types of candy, Shumway said. Shoppers especially like the bacon soda and candy cigarettes, he said.
In addition to pop and sweets, the store also carries gag gifts and retro memorabilia, like a "crazy cat lady" board game and John Wayne Christmas tree ornaments.
These are just a few of the quirky items Rocket Fizz carries.
"We have things you can't find anywhere else," Shumway said. "And it appeals to all ages."
Rocket Fizz Soda Pop & Candy Shops has two locations in Oregon: 12345 S.W. Horizon Blvd., Ste. 51, Beaverton (Progress Ridge TownSquare) and 535 S.W. Sixth Ave., Portland. For more information and store hours, visit rocketfizz.com.
